Alex McDonnell

ALBANY – Alexander P. McDonnell, 79, of Albany died on Monday, September 27, 2010 at Albany Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was born in New Rochelle on June 17, 1931, a son of Alexander and Anne Heffernan McDonnell and attended Regis High School. In the 1950′s, he served in the United States Air Force as an OSI officer and was stationed in French Morocco. As a graduate of George Washington University, he earned a B.A. in History.

He enjoyed a 45-year career in the computer field as a systems specialist primarily at Unisys.  Although much of his computer work on government contracts remains classified, in the 1970′s he created systems integrating DMV records across states and a system for the Colorado State Police which enhanced patrol safety. For the past ten years, he was employed by the New York State Insurance Fund.

A devout Catholic, he was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus of Holy Family in Silver Spring, Maryland and served as a lector and trustee for many years at Holy Cross Church and then at All Saints Catholic Church in Albany. Alex enjoyed singing, traveling, giving tours of Washington, D.C. and gardening.  Golf was his favorite pastime.  At a young age, he caddied with his brothers and spent many happy hours on the links, most recently with the Knights of Columbus Golf League.  He was involved with the New York State Golf Association as a Liaison.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years, Joan McDonnell, in 2008. He leaves seven children: Mary (Lee) Kohler, Anne McDonnell, Dan (Patty) McDonnell, Katie (Morgan) Ott, Trish (Jim) Henry, Jim (Karen) McDonnell, and John (Ellen) McDonnell.  He was the brother of Tom McDonnell, Michael McDonnell, Claire Carroll, Donald McDonnell and the late Jack McDonnell. Survivors include 17 grandchildren and many friends.

The family will receive friends at Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave, Albany, New York 12203 on Friday, October 1 from 4 to 7 P.M. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday at 9:30 A.M. at All Saints Catholic Church, 1168 Western Avenue. Inurnment at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands. William Karins

SELKIRK – William Karins, 90, of Selkirk, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at his home.  Mr. Karins was born in Albany, and lived in the area all his life.  He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was employed for many years as a sprinkler fitter, retiring from Edward J. Matthews, Inc. of Troy.  He was a member of the Bethany Reformed Church in Albany, a life member of the McKownville Fire Dept., and a life member of the American Legion Nathaniel Adams Blanchard Post 1040 in Delmar.

Mr. Karins was predeceased by his wife Mildred Keenan Karins.  He is survived by his son William Karins and his wife Diana of Chandler, AZ; his daughter Joy Gilmore of Selkirk; his sisters Katherine Schroeder of Clifton Park and Lillian Alger of Colonie; and by eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his brothers John, Thomas, Harold, Joseph, James, and Francis; and by his sisters Dorothy Wilson and Elizabeth and Rita Karins.

Philomena Vollaro

ALBANY – Philomena Vollaro, at the age of 109, passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2010.  She was born on September 18, 1901 in New York City, and later moved to Hornell, NY, where her father opened a tailor shop.  Philomena graduated from St. Ann’s Academic School in Hornell on June 25, 1916.  She attended high school for one year and received a certificate for the Palmer method of shorthand.  She also studied the piano and was qualified to teach piano.

Soon after graduation her family moved back to Brooklyn, NY.  Philomena obtained a job as a legal secretary with the Textile Banking Company in New York City where she met Joseph Vollaro, a credit man.  They were married on December 11, 1921 in St. Finbar’s R.C. Church in Brooklyn.  She bore two children, Robert and Ronald.

In 1940, shortly after Ronald was born, the family moved from Brooklyn to Elmont, Long Island where they lived for 40 years.  Philomena was a dedicated mother and housewife.  With her husband’s help she prepared many holiday meals until her early nineties.

In 1980, Philomena and her husband moved to Westmere.  Her son Robert was already living in Voorhessville.  Her husband passed away in April of 1994 and Philomena, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, became a resident of Teresian House in November of that year.

Philomena is survived by her son Robert Vollaro of Queensbury, and Ronald Vollaro of Schenectady; and by two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

M. Audrey Deso

GUILDERLAND – M. Audrey Deso, 91, of Guilderland, died Sunday, September 19, 2010 at the Eddy Heritage House in Troy. Mrs. Deso was born in Albany and was a graduate of Vincentian Institute. She lived for a time in West Orange, NJ, and Norfolk, VA before returning to Albany in 1967. She was a communicant of Christ the King Church in Guilderland.

Mrs. Deso was predeceased by her husband Robert E. Deso. She is survived by her sons Robert E. Deso, Jr. (Alice Rae) of McLean, VA, and Thomas R. Deso (Jo-Ann) of Andover, MA; her brother C. Richard Donahue (Therese) of North Salem, NY; her grandchildren Rob Deso (Amy), Susan Dussault (Mark Seneker), Karen Deso Brenza (Timothy), and Kate Kanach (Dan); and by six great grandchildren.

Carol A. Lawrence

ALBANY – Carol Ann Lawrence, 65, of Albany, died Thursday, September 16, 2010 of complications from hip surgery.  Carol was born in Albany, the daughter of the late James Norton and Helen Luce Norton.  She lived here most of her life and was a graduate of Mercy High School Class of 1963.  She was employed by the New York Telephone Co. as an operator, the Fuller Brush Co. in the billing department, and the Junior College of Albany (Sage Albany Campus) in the registrar’s office.  Carol had been an active member of the Chrommettes of America, an all female car club, proudly driving and displaying her red 1961 Corvette, although her chronic illness kept her from participating in these events in recent years (Click to see her club photo:  http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/chrommettes/Lawrence.html).

Carol is survived by her loving husband of nearly 24 years, Allen “Al” Lawrence; her stepchildren Jennifer M. Stevens (Matthew) of Melrose, and Allen J. “A.J.” Lawrence, Jr. of Albany; her sister Janice Woods of Camillus; and her brother in law William J. Lawrence of Guilderland.  She was predeceased by her brother Donald Norton.

Loretta R. Kelly

ALBANY – Loretta Rose Oppedisano Kelly, 63, of Albany, passed away at St. Peter’s Hospice on Thursday, September 16, 2010 following a courageous 8 ½ year battle with multiple myeloma.  Born in Albany on March 31, 1947, Loretta educated herself and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Russell Sage College.  She loved being a Physical Therapist, especially her work with the Visiting Nurse Association of Albany, the Center for the Disabled, and her private patients.  Loretta’s greatest love was her beautiful daughter, Kristin, her precious grandchildren, Francesca Loretta and Sebastian Constantino, and her loving son-in-law, Sebastian Allan Vicencio.  She wanted to express her gratitude to her sister Nancy Andre, her brother Richard, and sister-in-law Rose (Rocco) Oppedisano who gave her so much support and encouragement during the course of her illness.

Loretta was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Mary Oppedisano, and her brother Joe (Jodie) Oppedisano.  Survivors include her daughter Kristin Kelly-Vicencio; her son-in-law Sebastian Allan Vicencio; her grandchildren Francesca Loretta and Sebastian Constantino; her godson and nephew Joey Andre (Kelly) of Grafton; her nieces Alicia Andre Sousa-Saints (Justin) of Bermuda, Rachel Andre of Albany, and Christopher Andre (Cheryl) of Portland, Oregon; her brothers James (Barbara) and Richard; her sister-in-law Rose Rocco Oppedisano; her sisters Rosemary Grieco of Albany, Antionette Bosco of Brookfield, Connecticut, Jeannette Oppedisano Laird (Ken) of Castleton, and Nancy Andre (Joe) of Henderson, Nevada.  She is also survived by many other close nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, who brought her much happiness over the years.  Loretta felt very fortunate to have childhood friends, especially Gail Notz Cotler and Patricia Daley Harvey, who remained loyal to her over the years.

Susan L. Forman

NISKAYUNA – Susan L. Forman, 47, died on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at St. Peter’s Hospital with her loving family at her side, following a brief illness.  She had recently succeeded in recovering from breast cancer.

Born in Pittsfield, MA, she was the daughter of the late Ray and Norma Luscier of Cheshire, MA, and lived in Niskayuna since 1986.  She was a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and was employed as an administrative assistant in the New York State Capitol’s Executive Chamber, until leaving to concentrate on raising a family and supporting the community. She was a member of the Niskayuna Schools PTO, the Niskayuna Moms’ Group, and promoted reading for children.  She supported various charitable organizations including Community Hospice of Schenectady, Ellis/Bellevue Mobile Mammography Van, and the Animal Protective Foundation (APF) in Scotia.  As a breast cancer survivor she campaigned for greater awareness.

Sue is survived by her husband, Glenn, her son, Christopher, and daughter, Chelsea, and also her sisters Lori (Kevin) Diggs of East Greenbush, and Linda Savary and Kathy Luscier of Cheshire, MA, and her nieces Carrie, Kaylie, and Hannah Diggs and Becky Savary and nephews Michael, Daniel, and Jeffrey Savary and many great nieces and great nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her memorial service on Saturday, September  18 at the Niskayuna Reformed Church, 3041 Troy-Schenectady Road,
Niskayuna, NY 12309 with calling from 10AM, followed by an 11AM service and reception.

Robert P. Hanley

BALLSTON SPA – Robert P. Hanley,70, of Ballston Spa, went to be with the Lord, September 1, 2010 at Saratoga Hospital. Bob was born in Cohoes, and lived in the Capital District most of his life. He was a graduate of HVCC and was employed by the Grand Cash Market and later by Xerox Corp. and Crossman Arms before joining and becoming co-owner of the family business Hanley Sign Co., Inc.  Bob was an proud member of World Sign Associates, an organization he loved, once serving as Chairman of Division 9.  He was also co-owner of Sacandaga Campground.  He loved being with his family and friends.  He also enjoyed church, golf, shuffleboard, gardening and the NY Yankees.  He was a Mr. Fix-It and task master.  He was a planner and dreamer with a sharp business mind.  Most of all he loved being with his bride, Carol.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Carol L. Agan Hanley; his daughters Lisa Tymchyn (David) of Latham, Erin Nuzzi (David) of Burnt Hills, and Jennifer McClaine (Steve) of Duanesburg; his brother James Hanley (Barbara); his sister Sheila McGrath (Gene); his cousin Patty Hatalsky; his grandchildren Samantha Tymchyn, Daniel Nuzzi, Joseph Nuzzi; and by several nieces and nephews.
