Philip J. DiNovo

ALBANY - A man of deep faith, boundless energy, and lifelong devotion to his Italian heritage, Professor and Cavaliere Philip J. DiNovo, 92, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, at home, in the care and comfort of his beloved wife of 54 years, Mary Mezzone DiNovo.

Philip was born on July 13, 1933 in Albany, New York, the eldest of five children of the late August and Rose (Sgarlata) DiNovo. He was a graduate of Albany High School and earned an associate degree from Mohawk Valley Community College. After serving his country in the U.S. Army, Philip returned to the Capital District, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University at Albany.

Devoting his professional career to Morrisville State College, Philip served as a Professor of Business Administration. He founded the college’s business program and chaired the department for many years, mentoring generations of students.

It was during these years at Morrisville that Philip began the work that became his calling. In 1979, he founded the American Italian Heritage Association, and in 2009, he established the American Italian Heritage Museum in Albany. He served as Executive Director, gave countless talks, and authored numerous publications.

In 1994, Philip was knighted by the Italian government, receiving the title of Cavaliere in the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy for his service to the Italian American community, an honor he cherished. He was also recognized with a NYS Executive Chamber Citation for his efforts on behalf of Italian American heritage.

Above all, Philip was a man of profound Catholic faith, and he generously volunteered his time at his church.

In addition to his loving wife, Mary, Philip is survived by his brother, August (Vicki), and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sisters, Antoinette Whitehouse and Camille Micozzi, and his brother Salvatore (Joan) DiNovo.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Philip’s life at a Mass of Christian burial on June 10 at 10:30 am in All Saints Catholic Church, 16 Homestead St., Albany. Calling hours will take place before the Mass, beginning at 8:30 am. Interment will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Colonie. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hans Funeral Home, Albany.
