COLONIE

Keith F. Kelly

COLONIE - Keith Kelly, 61, a man of integrity, intelligence, love, and great wit, died on Sunday March 10, 2024. The Albany native was the son of the late Frank and Mary Dobiel Kelly. Keith is survived by Susan Emptage, his loving wife of twenty four years; his adored daughter Sara Kelly; his brother Frank Kelly (Sandra Holland) of Cortland; his mother and father-in-law Barbara and Jeffrey Emptage of Colonie: his brother-in-law Bill Emptage (Leslye) of Edina, MN, and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother David Kelly.

Keith was a lifelong learner. He began his educational journey at Christian Brothers Academy and continued his studies at New Hampshire College and earned his Master’s Degree from Empire State College. He used his education in business and labor policy at Goldman Sachs (formerly AYCO) as a benefits consultant to help others navigate the maze of Medicare and Social Security. Keith was always willing to share his knowledge with co-workers, family, and friends.

Keith was a dedicated member of Good Shepard Lutheran Church, serving as a member of the Church Council, a leader of adult education, and as a member of the men’s group. This faith community was central to his life.

Keith met and married Susan in 1999. Together, they embarked on a life changing trip to China in 2004. It was there that the Kelly family was born. Their daughter Sara became the center of Keith and Susan’s life. Keith followed all of Sara’s successes, from her first steps to her first days at school, from the lacrosse field to the stage for dance and piano recitals. He loved her so much and took great pride in all of her accomplishments.

Keith always enjoyed dining out with his family at his favorite haunts. He was an avid reader and loved keeping up on world events. His love of politics often involved a raised voice and many colorful expletives. Keith looked forward to the family trek each year to Michigan to visit his “Emptage Family” for an idyllic lakeside vacation. These were special times filled with family, food, and always many laughs!

Keith faced his many health issues over the years with determination and grit. He had a tremendous will to live and attacked each recovery with everything he had. He treated all of his health caregivers with kindness, respect and a healthy dose of “Keith Kelly” humor. There were tears shed by many who cared for him upon his passing, which is a testament to the man.

As van Gogh said, “Close friends are truly life’s treasures”. Keith was blessed with many friends throughout his life. He had some lifelong friends who continued to call, text, visit, and even played a part in helping Susan during his last challenging year. Keith was so grateful for the acts of kindness and friendship they shared.

Keith continued to live life on his own terms through it all, doing as much as he could for as long as he could. His feistiness, grit, and his great sense of humor saw Keith “all the way” to the end.

A Celebration of Keith’s Life is being planned for a future date.  In keeping with his generous spirit, memorial donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

During his life Keith was so proud of his Irish heritage. It is truly fitting, that as he drew his last breath, he enjoyed a drop of Irish Whiskey on his lips.

”Then fill to me the parting glass, Good night, and joy be with you all.”
