ALBANY – Walter S. Pogoda Jr., 80, of Albany passed away at his home on Wednesday, August 5, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. To his friends and family he was simply known as “Shiney”. He worked as a baker in the family business, Broadway Bakery for more than 40 years. He made the best rye bread and hard rolls in the Albany area. An avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing, hunting, and trapping; and was a lifetime member of the Polish American Citizens Club of Albany. He was quick with a joke or a light of a smoke and always made time for a friend. Shiney worked hard, played hard and made life play by his rules even until the end.
Husband of Constance Della Cioppa-Pogoda. Father of Nina (Bob) Hilmeyer, Monique Hollner, Joseph (Virginia) Pogoda Sr., Theresa (Clifton) Mayfield of Houston Texas, Ann Malone, Katrina Pogoda, and Susan (Joseph) Bianchini. Preceding him in death are his parents, Walter and Rose Pogoda; brothers, Theodore and Stanley Pogoda; and sister, Helen Iwanos, as well as a son, James Michael Pogoda. Brother of Edward (Barbara) Pogoda and Irene VanFonda. He is survived by many grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services, Saturday, August 8, at 8:15 a.m. at Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at All Saints Catholic Church, Homestead St., Albany. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, August 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. The family has asked for donations to be made to Community Hospice, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205 in lieu of flowers.
