Rose Mary Slavin

DELMAR – Rose Mary Slavin died on Tuesday, November 18, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Health Care Center in Delmar.  Rose Mary was the daughter of the late Matthew J. Slavin and Helen M. Nash Slavin.  She grew up in Troy and graduated from St. Peter’s Academy and Catholic Central High School, class of 1941.

Rose was a graduate of St. Peter’s Hospital School of Nursing, the College of St. Rose, and a 1959 graduate of St. John’s University, New York City.  She worked at St. Peter’s Hospital for five years as supervisor and instructor in the School of Nursing.  Rose also worked at Samaritan Hospital in Troy for three years, and Russell Sage College for ten years as instructor and Assistant Professor in nursing.  She then went on to Albany Medical Center as one of the Directors of Nursing for the next seventeen years.

Rose was a member of several nursing organizations and stayed active volunteering in nursing even after retirement.  She volunteered in the Poverello Clinic in Albany, and in community nursing.  In 1991, Rose became a member of the third order of St. Francis, serving as minister, formation director and member, up to the time of her death.

Rose was a lover of the arts.  She loved piano, and also did oil painting.

She leaves one sister, Helene, who is a Sister of the Blessed Sacrament, a community dedicated to African Americans and Native Americans.  She also leaves many beloved cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Monday morning at 8:30, and from there to the Parish of Mater Christi, Hurst Ave., Albany at 9:30.  Relatives and friends are invited, and may call at the funeral home Sunday from 4-6 pm.  Interment will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Troy.  Those wishing to remember Rose may leave donations to the: Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, 1663 Bristol Pike, Bensalem, PA 19020.  To leave a message of condolence for the family or obtain directions to the funeral home, please visit www.HansFuneralHome.com.
