WEST SAND LAKE – Olga Sloboda Dobush, 95, of West Sand Lake, NY left us with a gentle last breath on June 30th, 2013 at St Mary’s hospice in Troy, NY. Olga was born in Cohoes, NY on April 11th, 1918 to Bolshevik revolution refugees from Kiev; Onisin Sloboda, a tailor and Nataley Luskoviech Sloboda, a child-bride and mother of three; Olga (husband Theodore Dobush), John Sloboda (wife Helen) of Cohoes and Andrew Sloboda (wife Ruby) of Waterford. Only Helen Sloboda survives.
Olga, wife of Theodore Z. Dobush is remembered for her own parenting of six children, Theodore Vladimir Dobush (aka Brother Thomas of New Skete) Cambridge, NY (deceased), Basil John Dobush (wife Donna) of Saratoga, NY, Kenneth Eugene Dobush (wife Joyce) of Plymouth, MA, Christine Helene Voss (husband Kenneth) of Berthoud, CO, Richard Dennis Dobush (wife Patricia) of West Sand Lake, and Soyka Susan Dobush (partner Kathryn Jessup) of Mt Shasta, CA. She is also survived by 8 grand-children and 7 great-grand-children.
Olga was remarkably generous, thoughtful, intuitive and beloved by her family and friends, who she actively supported in many ways. She was notably natural and lived close to the earth in her garden, enjoyed sewing, and cooking and preserving and was a master with flavor in the kitchen. She was intensely creative and became a locally appreciated artistic quilter. She completed numerous works and every child born into her family and extended family was gifted into the world with their own quilt. She was the member of the Delmar Quilters Guild.
Her eldest son was notably a founder of the New Skete Monastery of Cambridge, NY. He originated the concept of monks breeding and raising German Shepherds as a spiritual lesson in obedience resulting in the “Be Your Dog’s Best Friend” book series.
Olga was as graceful and precious in death as she was in life. We will all take inspiration from her to sustain us. She has made of her body an anatomical gift to education.
A memorial will be held at the Century House, 997 New Loudon Rd, Latham, NY 12110 at 1 – 4 pm on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2013. The Monks will hold their own memorial in 40 days. A funeral will be held in one year when her cremains are returned.

Good-Bye Aunt Olga—–only two and a half months after your 95th birthday. You will be remembered as one of our favorite “Aunts”. Peace and condolences to all your family, our cousins. There is a special place in heaven for the quilters and it is right next to the carpenters (John Sloboda) and fishermen/hunters (Andy Sloboda)! Please say “hello” to them.

Dear relatives and friends of Olga,
Some of us at New Skete, where her son Brother Thomas lies buried, have known Olga and her extended family for 50 years, and considered her home a place of warm welcome for us. I am honored and grateful for these friendships and acquaintances, which mean and have meant so much and have been so helpful to me (and us), just as I am proud to have been an associate, friend, and brother in monastic life of Br. Thomas. May all of you be blest by her memory as you were blest by her life.
