ALBANY – Katherine M. Hans Waterson, 92, of Albany, died Tuesday, November 23, 2010. Mrs. Waterson was born in Albany and was a graduate of the Cathedral Academy. She attended the College of St. Rose, and after marrying a New Scotland Ave. neighbor, she lived in Williamstown, MA, returning to Albany in 1957 to her old New Scotland Avenue neighborhood. She was employed for many years by Dr. William Schreiber in Albany, and she was affiliated with the Hans Funeral Home in Albany for many years. She was a communicant of the former St. Teresa of Avila Church in Albany for nearly 80 years. In 1982 she survived the often fatal Guillain–Barré syndrome, and later volunteered as a support counselor to other victims of the disease.
Mrs. Waterson was predeceased by her husband Paul J. Waterson in 1957. She is survived by her children Paul W. Waterson of Loudonville, Alice Waterson Nitka and her husband Martin of Ludlow, VT, and John J. Waterson and his wife Deborah of Albany; her sister in law Helene Hans of Albany; her friend and cousin Mary B. Hans of Albany; her grandchildren Christine Fromm and her husband Tim of East Hampton, NY, Abigail Nitka of Manhattan, Molly Nitka of Rutland, VT, and Casey and Cara Waterson of Albany; her great grandchildren Leah and Chelsea Fromm; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers William C. Hans, Jr. and John J. Hans, Sr.; and by her daughter in law Patricia Reidy Waterson.
Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Saturday morning at 8:30, and from there to the Parish of Mater Christi (formerly St. Catherine of Siena Church), Hurst Ave., Albany at 9:30. Relatives and friends are invited, and may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Friday. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
