GUILDERLAND – Joan F. Hoffberg Meyer, 85, of Guilderland, passed away Monday, June 1, 2015.  Joan was born in Manhattan, the daughter of the late Jack and Margaret Potolowsky Hoffberg, and was raised in the Bronx.  She then lived on Long Island, first in Levittown and for many years in Baldwin, until moving to the Capital District in 1997.  Joan worked for many years with her husband in his construction business.  She and her husband Jack were also avid bridge players, and in 1966 won a national bridge tournament.  She was a member of the American Contract Bridge League, and attained Life Master Member status in 1967.  She continued playing bridge in the Capital District at the Shelly Studio of Bridge and Games, at the Albany JCC, and other locations in Schenectady and Clifton Park.  Joan enjoyed traveling with her husband, and together they visited many places around the world, her favorites being France, Australia, New Zealand and South America.  She also was an avid fan of sports, closely following the New York Yankees and the New Jersey Devils; and she enjoyed horse racing, often visiting harness and thoroughbred racetracks.

Joan was predeceased by her husband Jack Meyer, and her son Steven A. Meyer.  She is survived by her son Michael B. Meyer and his wife Colleen of Halfmoon, NY; and her granddaughter Joanna Helmer (Peter) of Manlius, NY.  She was also predeceased by her brother Walter Hoff.

There will be no services or calling hours.  Inurnment will be in Long Island National Cemetery.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hans Funeral Home, Albany.  The family suggests memorial contributions to Memorial and Honor Program, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.  To leave a message of condolence for the family, please visit www.HansFuneralHome.com.
