Albert W. “Al” Huba

GUILDERLAND – With great sadness, the family of Albert W. “Al” Huba, 94, announces his passing at Albany Memorial Hospital on Monday, December 31, 2012.  Mr. Huba was born in Albany, the son of the late William and Mary Huba.  He was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Rita M. Johnson Huba.

Mr. Huba was a 1935 graduate of Christian Brothers Academy and retired in 1980 as the Right of Way and Claims Supervisor of the former New York Telephone Co.  He was a World War II Marine Corps Veteran, and a sergeant in the Fifth Marine Division.  He participated in the invasion and battle of Iwo Jima, and later served in the occupation of Japan.

He was a former trustee and longtime communicant of Christ the King Roman Catholic Church in Westmere; a charter member of the Albany Nocturnal Adoration Society; a long time member of the Western Turnpike Golf Club, where he was club champ 21 times; a life member of the Marine Corps League; a member of the Fifth Marine Association; and a life member of the Telephone Company Pioneers.

Survivors include one son Thomas and his wife Patricia of Chantilly, VA; four daughters: Marie Huba of Guilderland, Anne Cheeseman of Glenmont, Jean Huba of Guilderland, and Mary Vrolijk and her husband Gregory of Schenectady.  His son Howard died in 1994.  He also has a sister Mary Blessing of Clarksville; four grandsons: James Huba, Brian Cheeseman, Gregory Vrolijk, and Jason Vrolijk; three granddaughters: Kelly Cheeseman, Laran Huba, and Lindsey Huba; two great granddaughters Mackenzie Huba and Maris Cheeseman; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his brothers Harold J., Walter E., Edward, Joseph, Raymond and Robert; and by his sisters Gertrude Masse and Dolores Huba.

Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Friday morning at 9:00, and from there to Christ the King Church, Sumpter Ave., Guilderland, at 10:00.  Relatives and friends are invited, and may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4-8 p.m. The parish family of Christ the King Church will gather in the funeral home at 4:30 pm Thursday for a service of prayer and remembrance.  All are welcome.   Interment will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Church Building Fund, 10 Sumpter Ave., Albany, NY 12203.  To leave a message of condolence for the family, send a sympathy card, or obtain directions to the funeral home, please visit
