Mary

ALBANY – Mary M. O’Leary, 78, of Slingerlands, went to eternal rest on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the Saratoga Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones.  Mrs. O’Leary was born in Glenties, Co. Donegal, Ireland, the daughter of the late James Cunningham and Susan Byrne Cunningham. Mary made the long voyage across the sea at the tender age of 21. Mary loved her homeland and would often tell stories of growing up in Ireland and the fun times she would share with her beloved Mother and many friends. She would often say that although at times they faced adversity, she had a happy childhood, enjoying a simple of a way of life growing up in Ireland.  Mary settled in Albany and raised her family.  She always cherished the many friendships she made while living at Marie Rose Manor.

Mary was steadfast in her religion and her faith in the Lord. She was a communicant of the former Holy Cross Church and St. Catherine of Siena Church in Albany. Mary had a very strong work ethic and was employed for many years by the Little Sisters of the Poor, and by the New York State Office of General Services, from which she retired in 1996.

Mary was predeceased by her brothers John and Patrick Cunningham.  Mrs. O’Leary is survived by her children Kevin J. O’Leary (Susan), Patricia Currado (Edward), and Susan Eason (Michael); her former husband Joseph O’Leary; and her grandchildren Mary Allison O’Leary, and Hailey, Hannah, and Holly Eason. More than anything else, Mary thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and always looked forward to their fun visit together. Sometimes this involved making long journeys, however she always managed to make a new friend along the way. Mary had an infectious spirit with a kind, and gentle soul. She will be greatly missed; but, as she would always tell us when we departed from her, it is now our turn to wish her “safe home”.

Mary’s family would like to express our heartfelt thanks for all the loving care and comfort provided by the staff of both Maplewood Manor nursing home and the D1, Telemetry unit at Saratoga Hospital. Mary loved live entertainment.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary’s name to SCMM Maplewood Manor residence special events fund, 149 Ballston Avenue, Ballston Spa, NY 12020.

Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Saturday morning at 9:45, and from there to Mater Christi Church (formerly St. Catherine of Siena Church), Hurst Ave., Albany at 10:30.  Relatives and friends are invited, and may call at the funeral home Friday from 4-7 p.m.  Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.  To leave a message of condolence for the family or obtain directions to the funeral home, please visit www.HansFuneralHome.com.
