ALBANY – Margaret J. Smith, 92, of Albany, died Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at the home of her son.  Mrs. Smith was born in Norfolk, VA, the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Ellen Hartnett Garfield.  She was raised in Portsmouth, NH and Albany, where she lived most of her life.  She was a graduate of Philip Schuyler High School, and was an insurance broker for over 65 years.  She was employed at the Connors and Reddy, E.J. Dignum & Sons insurance firms for many years.  She was a member of the Insurance Women of North America, and was past president of the St. James Church Rosary Society.  She also was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary’s Church in Albany for over 40 years, and a member of the church senior citizens group, and a member of the Colonie Village Seniors.

Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her former husband Arthur F. Smith, Sr. in 1982.  She is survived by her sons Michael F. Smith (Lynn) of Loudonville, Arthur F. Smith, Jr. (Jo-Ann) of Halfmoon, Henry G. Smith (Caroline J.) of Guilderland, and David B. Smith (Alicia) of Menands; her grandchildren Meghan Baltich (Matthew), Brian P. Smith (Sarah), Kristen Staikos (John), Mark Smith (Vanessa), and Jessica, Sean, Kelsey, Lauren and Madison Smith; her great grandchildren Katie Baltich, Connor and Hannah Smith, Alex, Sophia and Chloe Staikos, and Donovan and Brady Smith; and by four nephews and one niece.  She was predeceased by her sister Jean Plummer and her grandson Kevin M. Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday morning at 9:30 in All Saints Catholic Church (formerly St. Margaret Mary’s Church), Homestead St., Albany.  Relatives and friends are invited, and may call at the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, on Friday from 4-8 p.m.  Interment will be in Our Lady Help of Christians Cemetery, Glenmont.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the pre-existing endowed Margaret J.
