ALBANY – John M. “Jack” Hayes passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2020. Jack was born on October 7, 1943 in Manhattan, NY, the son of the late Dr. John G. Hayes and Margaret O’Rourke Hayes. Jack was known for his great sense of humor and for lifting the spirits of everyone he came in contact with.
Jack is survived by his loving wife Kathy; his sisters Sheila Devlin (Brian), Patricia Krusee (Joe), and his sister in law Nancy Kiyonaga (Stan). He had many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Jack was also blessed to have wonderful neighbors the Gottsteins and Watersons whom he considered family. He is also survived by his lifelong best friend Bob Bruno who never let a day go by without a phone call or a visit to let Jack know he was thinking of him.
The family would like to thank all of the Community Hospice staff who always went above and beyond. A very special thank you to Lucille Jackson, his caregiver and friend throughout his long illness.
Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Friday morning at 8:15 a.m., and from there to All Saints Catholic Church, 16 Homestead St. (behind CVS). Registration for the mass at church will be required upon arrival. Kathy:
I just learned of Jack’s death and want you to know how much I admired his unique and engaging humor. I know of no person who was so gifted in assigning humorous and appropriate nicknames to his friends (mine was “stretch:). Jack was blessed to share his life with you and I grieve now with you and the family. I hope you will all be comforted by memories of the many happy adventures you shared with Jack and by the knowledge that your love and very presence greatly enhanced his life
Oh, Kathy. How can we think about Jack without smiling? From the day we met him at Atlantis Apartments, he became part of our family. We dominated that second floor of our little apartment building, and having Jack right across the hall was the source of countless hours of fun. Jack and you were there for so many birthdays and celebrations, and we cherished our friendship. Even though the years separated us, we’ve thought of you and Jack so often. Hopefully, he and our sweet Esther (or “Sarge,” as he called her) are gallivanting together, giving his new neighbors a reason to smile. Much love to you and to your whole family. xoxo Susan, Jeff, Adam and Jake
Kathy,
Dan and I are so sorry for your loss. May all your memories of a life shared bring you comfort.
Dear Kathy and family, I just learned of Jack’s death and am so sorry to hear of it. I am your cousin and visited you and Nancy, and your mom and dad in Albany many years ago. My dad “Bub” Adams was your Dad’s first cousin.
I lost my dear husband, Don, last October after a long illness. Please accept my sincere sympathy.
I have pictures of you, Nancy, and your Mom and Dad which I would be glad to give you, if you would like them. I live in Warren County now.

Jack left a wonderful mark on everyone he encountered and his loss will be a huge source of grief for anyone who was lucky enough to know him. Pam and I will miss him terribly, but we will try to only remember the great times we had with him and Kathy. Although many miles separated us, he was never far from our thoughts. God Bless you, Jack, and continue to make Heaven a better place.
