ALBANY – John J. Sickles, aka “Pop Sickles” and “Uncle Buddy,” 84, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2011 in Naples, FL. John was a lifelong resident of Albany, and was proud to have served in the US Navy during both World War II and the Korean War. He was a retiree of National Grid Power Corp where he served as a Service Supervisor. John “Pop Sickles” acquired his nickname during the time when he was a coach for Westland Hills Little League. After retirement, being an avid golfer, Pop worked at the Capital Hills Golf Course as a Starter & Ranger. Pop was an active member of the Adirondack Model A Club, the American Legion, the Elks Club, the VFW and the Niagara Mohawk 25 year club.
John was predeceased by his wife Janet L (Duncan) Sickles in 1994 and his eldest son Gary J Sickles in 1991. He is survived by his son Bruce J and his daughter-in-law Luann, along with many generations of cousins.
Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Saturday morning at 10:00. Relatives and friends are invited, and may call at the funeral home Friday from 4-8 pm. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Albany.
