ALBANY — John J Flanagan, 81, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2021 after a short illness.
John was born in 1940 in Albany, N.Y. to the late Patrick and Alice (Gannon) Flanagan, both of County Roscommon, Ireland. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Anna Marie Keller and Alice Patricia Flanagan.
John is survived by and will be sorely missed by his adoring wife of 55 years, Elizabeth (Farrand) Flanagan, and beloved children, Patrick (Asta) Flanagan of Darien, CT, John (Laura) Flanagan of Troy, Amy (John) McCarthy of Guilderland, and Michael Flanagan of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; and by his grandchildren, Daphney Rudolph and Michael Sorvillo, Kate and Madeline McCarthy, and Dylan, Sean, and Brayden Flanagan; and nephews JR, Kevin, and Greg Keller.
John retired in 1995 from the Niagara Mohawk power company after 32 years of service. Soon after, he and Elizabeth moved to Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island where they welcomed family and friends for over 25 years.
When their children were young, John loved taking them skiing at Brodie mountain, attending and photographing their various sporting events, and taking family vacations on Cape Cod.
He was a successful financial and real estate investor whose advice was sought by family and friends.
In his free time, you’d find him shooting the breeze with friends and working on cars. John had such a gifted mechanical mind that he could fix anything but cars were his first passion.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of John J Flanagan to The Health Wagon, providing healthcare to the uninsured and underserved of Central Appalachia, at P.O. Box 7070 Wise, VA 24293 or to the charity of one’s choosing.

Condolences to John’s entire family, he was a fun childhood friend. Lots of laughs and great memories of the antics we experienced while teenagers. Lost touch but ran into him at a casino and finally at doctors offices. John works hard and was extremely successful in real estate. Proud to have known him, his parents and departed siblings. RIP Friend.
