
ALBANY – George J. Rocco, 84, of Albany, died Monday, August 24, 2009 with his family at his side just after returning home from St. Peter’s Nursing & Rehab. Mr. Rocco was born in Albany and lived here all his life. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was self employed for many years as a contractor, and began his career working together with his father as Joseph Rocco & Son. He was a premier pool player and dart shooter, well known for his fabulous sense of humor. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and all his family, and most recently his twin great granddaughters.
Mr. Rocco is survived by his wife Gloria M. Collandra Rocco. His children are Rose M. Oppedisano (Richard) of Latham, the late George J. Rocco, Jr., Thomas F. Rocco of Watervliet, and Robert P. Rocco of Albany; his brothers Frank A. Rocco, Pasquale Rocco (Ida), and Vincent Rocco, Jr. all of Albany; his grandchildren Richard M. and Dina Oppedisano, Patrick Rocco Krug, Lauren C. and Andrew R. Rocco, and John E. Stafford; his great grandchildren Michaela and Madeline Oppedisano; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Vincent Rocco, Sr., and his sisters Elizabeth Galea, Josephine Gianquitto, and Marie Rocco.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of CCU at St. Peter’s Hospital for their compassionate support during his stay there. Many, many thanks to the staff of St. Peter’s Nursing & Rehab who became more than his caretakers but friends as well.
Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Friday morning at 8:00, and from there to St. Margaret Mary’s Church, Homestead St., Albany at 8:45. Relatives and friends are invited, and may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4-8 p.m. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
