I think of Eddie every March 1. Strange, you might think, since I haven’t seen Eddie for many, many years. But as kids Eddie and I always hung out and I remember, when the subject arose, he would always tell other kids his birthday was Feb. 29 and he only got to celebrate it every four years because of leap year! Of course, being a close buddy, I knew the truth. Eddie was quite the storyteller! We spent lots of time together, riding our bikes to St. Peter’s every day for school, we were altar boys, serving those early morning 7:00 am masses (even served when Ellen and Bob tied the knot). We played Little League together, were on the same bowling team and I remember as a high schooler losing lots of pool games to him at the Classic Cue on Broadway. Eddie was a very good sketch artist (I told him this should be his career ambition) and he always liked the crusts cut off his sandwiches. Funny the things you remember. So, today being March 1, I thought of Eddie as I sipped my morning coffee, wished him a Happy Birthday, as always, and then decided to Google him to see what he was up to. To my dismay and sorrow, I saw the link to his obituary and that is what prompted this response. To you, Rene, Kathy, Ellen, Bill and Ray my deepest sympathies for your loss. I’m sure March 1 will always be a special day for you. I, too, will continue to think of Eddie each March 1, remembering him and the fun days we had together as kids.
Best to all,
Gerard Hickey
