ALBANY – Dorothy Jane (Marino) Fishlinger, 90, of Albany, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2021 in St. Peter’s Hospital. Dorothy was born in Hollis, NY, the youngest of nine girls, to Anthony Marino and Theresa Miglino. She married Elmer in 1949, having first met him when she was eight years old, and they spent 64 years together. They began their life together on Long Island until 1965, when they purchased a 400 acre farm in upstate New York. Once there, she began work in HR at St. Peter’s Hospital where she spent most of her career coordinating employee benefits, insisting new employees contribute to retirement savings as they walked in the door. She retired in 1992 with over 27 years of service. To this day, countless retirees thank her for their ability to retire comfortably. Dorothy once wrote that “to be remembered by those we leave behind is not to die.” She may be gone but remains forever in our hearts.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Dorothy VanDeWal (Arthur) of South Glens Falls, Elmer Fishlinger, Jr. (Ruth) of Riverside, CA, Anne Soldner (Mike) of Duanesburg, NY, and Walter Fishlinger, IV (Alice) of Albany; her grandchildren Steven, Timothy. Matthew, Mandi, Lena, Kristen, Andrew and Emily. She was predeceased by her husband Elmer in 2013, her son James in 2020, her granddaughter Diane VanDeWal, and her siblings Anne, Carmella, Emily, Margaret, Martha, Camilla, Katherine and Adrienne.
The family would especially like to thank Sister Katherine Graber for her lifetime of devotion to the entire family, but especially her friend Dorothy.

Walter,
We were so sorry to hear of the loss of your Mom.

Dear cousins Dorothy, Elmer, Anne and Walter, I was so saddened to receive the news from Emily that my Aunt Dot had died. She was someone whom I loved very much. I tried to recall when in recent years I had begun to have a closer relationship with her and I think it was when your Dad passed away. I wrote her a letter and was thrilled to receive a letter back from her a short time later. Then we began to stay in touch on a more regular basis. I loved talking to her and she was always joyful, positive and an excellent source of family history. I enjoyed our conversations so much that I tried to get other family members to get in touch with her, predicting that they would also love the experience. In addition, your Mom always had a very strong presence in my dreams.
About two weeks ago I called and got her voicemail. I left both of my phone numbers and hoped to hear from her. For the next couple of days I kept checking my phone to see if she had called back and maybe I had missed the call. I was planning to call again, and had decided that if I did not reach her on my second attempt I would contact Emily to see if everything was all right. Then came the dread call on Monday night. I will forever miss my aunt, my friend. My heart breaks for you. Sending love and prayers.
Your cousin Frances (a/k/a Nanny)

Dear Cousins,
Please accept my condolences for the loss of your mother. Aunt Dot was my godmother. I always felt a
special connection to her. When we were young, she was so much fun to be with. I sorely regret that we lost touch as time went by. I did have a wonderful conversation with her within the past year. I will treasure that memory. She will always have a very special place in my heart and in my prayers. May she Rest In Peace.

To all the Fishlinger family:
Dorothy was such a wonderful person and certainly my rock having helped get me through some difficult times. We had many happy times at St. Peter’s. As with many others, I am retired now and owe my very comfortable retirement to your mother.
Much Love to All,
Dale
