NISKAYUNA – Carol George, 71, passed away peacefully on her birthday February 17, 2011 in her home with her family and pets; her long courageous battle with cancer is now over. Carol moved to Schenectady as a newlywed in June of 1962. After a brief nursing career, she was devoted to raising her two children. She performed volunteer work for schools as her children were growing up and then for various community organizations; the most rewarding being her fifteen year involvement with the patrons and members of the Schenectady Civic Players. Carol was a loving and caring person who enjoyed reading, gardening, and traveling.
Carol is survived by her husband Raymond, son Tony George of Frederick, Maryland, daughter Suzanne George Gonsalves of Taunton, Massachusetts, and precious granddaughter Miriam Rose.
An Orthodox ceremony for the separation of the soul from the body was performed at her bedside by her beloved priest, Father Dennis Nagi, the day of her death. Following the service, in a final act of total self-giving love, Carol donated her body for research via the Anatomical Gift Program at Albany Medical College.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Forty Day Memorial service following the 9:30 am liturgy on March 27, 2011, at St. Sophia church on 440 Whitehall Road, in Albany. The memorial portion of the worship will begin between 10:30-11:00am. Family will receive mourners in the church hall following the service. When I read Carol’s obituary this morning in the Gazette, I was smiling thinking of how much she assisted us, with the help of her husband over our seat mix-up at the Civic Playhouse last season. I felt sad that I had never met her personally. Her friendly, helpful voice on the telephone matches her cheerful photo. I express my sincere condolences to her husband and family. Cassie and Loretta

What a loss, not only to husband Ray and family, but to the community. Carol literally became the voice of Schenectady Civic Players over the years in her always above-and-beyond, cheerful performance in box office, subscriptions, and customer service care — not only by telephone but in countless in-person contacts. She gave a beautiful human face to Civic Players,. We will truly miss her presence so much — as well as the home-made cookies she and Ray brought to every closing performance.

To the family of Carol George,
I was so saddened to read of Carol’s passing. We had many occasions of conversation over the years related to changing of tickets to the Cicic Playhouse- but those short exchanges always led to friendly talk about shared interests and health challenges facing us and family members. Carol was so casual about her illness that I thought it wasn’t as serious as it was. She was so friendly and concerned, she will be sorely missed. My deepest sympathy to you all. Martha Szuminskyj

To Carol’s Family,
When we saw Carol at the theater in February, we had no idea we would never see her again. We will so miss her friendly smile and lively conversation on play nights. We’ll miss running into her at he Co-op and other places around town. We will never forget all the work she put into helping us choose season seats for us and our boys, and making sure we were happy. We are honored to have known such a treasure to our community.
