
ALBANY. Arlene Ellen Koerner, 97, died on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center. It would have been her 75 th wedding anniversary to the late Donald R. Koerner.
Arlene was born on September 18, 1923 in Van Hornesville, NY. She graduated from the Van Hornesville Central School in 1941 and the University of Rochester School of Nursing in 1944. She worked as an assistant Nursing Arts Instructor and Head Nurse on Men’s Surgery. During World War II, she trained a group of Nursing Attendants to help relieve the nursing shortage. She left nursing in 1947 to raise a much-loved family.
She was interested in music and studied the piano and cello. In addition, she enjoyed playing golf and bridge and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. Arlene and her husband traveled extensively throughout Europe, as well as Mexico and the Caribbean. She loved animals and was especially fond of cats.
Arlene was predeceased by her husband and is survived by her children Jean Stern Edwardsen of Albany, NY, Richard and his wife Pamela (Aldridge) of Dayton, OH, and James of Akron, OH; her grandchildren Sarah (Grant) Jordan of San Diego, CA, Megan (Matt) Nickles of Troy, OH, Kyle of Akron, OH and Kayla of Memphis, TN; her great-grandchildren Adelyn and Rylee Nickles; and her sister Janet (Gordon) Knapp of Syracuse; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 7th, at 11:00 a.m., in St. Vincent de Paul Church, 900 Madison Ave, Albany, NY 12208. We are so sad to hear Mrs. Koerner passed but how much joy that she joins her husband on their 75th anniversary.
They were such a lovely couple and we enjoyed living next door to them.
