ALBANY – Georgiana Gaffney, 94, of Albany, died Friday, January 28, 2011 at the Teresian House Nursing Home. Mrs. Gaffney was born and raised in Syracuse, lived in Schenectady for a time, then moved to Albany in 1954, and later for several years in Schenectady. She was a communicant of the former St. Teresa of Avila Church in Albany, and the former Immaculate Conception Church in Schenectady.
Mrs. Gaffney was predeceased by her husband Raymond R. Gaffney. She is survived by her children Cheryl Gaffney Schneider (Stephen Vanderbilt) of Burnt Hills, Michael Gaffney (Sue) of Albany, Patrick Gaffney (Donna) of Loudonville, and Timothy J. Gaffney, Sr. (Lisa) of Rotterdam; her sister Evelyn Zoll Wilde of Syracuse; her sister in law Arlette Cole of California; her grandchildren Rhiannon of California, Sean Gaffney (Patti Gallagher) of Slingerlands, Capt. Shannon Gaffney, M.D., USAF, of San Antonio, TX, Seamus, Keeley and Ryan Gaffney of Albany, Thomas Gaffney (Anna) of Cedar Grove, NJ, Kellie Gaffney of Albany, and Timothy J. Gaffney, Jr., Katherine and Aryn-Elizabeth Gaffney all of Rotterdam; her great grandchildren Thomas “TJ” and Annalise; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Rita Eichholzer, Grace Thelma Tupper, and Hazel Barnett, and her brother William Cole.
The family would like to express their thanks and heartfelt appreciation to the staff of the Teresian House, particularly Carmel Gardens, for the wonderful care they provided Mrs. Gaffney.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Infant of Prague Chapel at the Teresian House, 200 Washington Ave. Ext., Albany, Friday at 12:00 noon. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont. Scott R. Smith

ROTTERDAM – Scott R. Smith, 27, of Rotterdam, died unexpectedly on Sunday, January 23, 2011. Scott was born in Albany and raised in Canton, Binghamton, and Cortland. He was a graduate of Cortland High School, and was trained as an electrician through the electrical unions in Albany and El Paso, TX. He then was employed by Electrical Staffing, Inc.
Scott is survived by his wife Buffy Little-Smith; his father Richard D. Smith of Rotterdam; his grandparents Elizabeth and Edwin Combs; his sister Tiffany Smith of Albany; and by several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother Debora Ann Nicklas Smith in 2008.
Calling hours will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Thursday from 4-8 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited. ALBANY – Mary P. Horick, 92, of Albany, died Saturday, January 22, 2011 at her home. Mrs. Horick was born in Albany and lived here all her life. She was employed by a laundry service, and during World War II by the General Electric Co. After the war she was employed by the Montgomery Ward department store for 35 years. She was a communicant of All Saints Catholic Church and the former St. Margaret Mary’s Church.
Mrs. Horick was predeceased by her husband John V. Horick in 1998. She is survived by many nieces and nephews including Jerry McGee, Vickie Taylor, Kim McGee, Cindy Dinardi, and Timothy McGee and Sandy Fuller, who also were her beloved caregivers. She was also predeceased by her sisters Genevieve Galka, Helen Parker, and Regina McGee; her brother Raymond Tomlinson, and her nephews Timothy and Gregory McGee.
Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Tuesday morning at 8:45 and from there to All Saints Catholic Church (formerly St. Margaret Mary’s Church), Homestead St., Albany at 9:30. ALBANY -- Frances M. Amodeo DiNovo, 97, of Albany, died Saturday, January 15, 2011 at St. Peter’s Nursing & Rehab Center. Mrs. DiNovo was born in Albany, the daughter of the late Pasquale and Mary Amodeo. She was a graduate of the St. Peter’s Nursing School, and was employed as a visiting nurse by the VNA of Albany. She was a communicant of the former St. Margaret Mary’s Church, and a member of the St. Peter’s Hospital School of Nursing Association.
Mrs. DiNovo was predeceased by her husband, Salvatore “Sam” DiNovo. She is survived by her children, Elizabeth DiNovo, Rosemarie Boyle (Steven), Joseph DiNovo (Roberta), Lawrence DiNovo (Maryanne) and Roberta DiFrancesco (Joseph); and by eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. One of ten children, Mrs. DiNovo was predeceased by seven brothers and two sisters.
The DiNovo family would like to express their appreciation to the nurses and staff of the third floor of St. Peter’s Nursing and Rehab Center for the wonderful care they provided to Mrs. DiNovo.

John Mancini

ROME, ITALY – John Mancini, 79, passed away on December 22, 2010 after a short illness. Born on Feb. 1, 1931 in Villalago P. Aquila, Italy, he came to Albany, NY in 1947 to live in the neighborhood of Madison Ave. & Grand St. He became a mason in 1950 and joined the membership of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsworkers Local #2 & 6, retiring in 1992. In 1952 he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War.
John was predeceased by his parents Anthony & Marie Mancini. He is survived by his sister Rita Gatta and a niece Mariella. John was close friends with the Lucarelli family.

Norma Maria DeMaios

TROY – Norma Maria DeMaios, 84, nee Norma M. Baldani passed on to eternal rest, on January 5, 2011. Born in Pawtucket, RI, she was the daughter of Angelo & Nella Baldani and the loving partner of Joseph DeMaios of Troy. She attended and graduated from the public schools in Pawtucket, then enrolled in the Vesper George Art School in Boston, MA. After a short period of teaching basic art & design, she discovered her interest and passion for music. She enrolled as a student at the New England Conservatory of Music with a special interest in the piano. While there she made contact with a Mrs. Elsie Foss and, became her teacher of the piano for the next 20 years. It was Mrs. Foss who recognized her special talent for teaching the piano and launched her career as piano teacher. Norma taught piano for students of all ages over the next 60 years. She taught this instrument both in Massachusetts & Maine.
She retired in 2005 and relocated to Troy, NY to discover the natural beauty of both the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondacks. During this period she became afflicted with Polymyalgia, an auto-immune disease. It deteriorated her physical strength and limited her opportunities to hike, cross-country ski, bike and kayak. Nevertheless, she was challenged and did some short term excursions. Her love for people is reflected in her abilities to listen to and be of help to many friends, acquaintances and former students. Her love for animals, of all species, and their positive affection to her was legion. She was proud of her Italo-Tuscan-American heritage. She always displayed much warm concern to all humans and animals that came in contact with her. She enjoyed the fine art of home cooking and displayed her talents and expertise in our kitchen as well as those of other family & friends. She is survived by her husband Joseph, numerous nieces and nephews, and our cat, Boukee.
Her last wish was to donate her body to a medical college in the area for research.

Richard J. McCarthy

ALBANY – Richard J. McCarthy, 88, of Albany, died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the Evergreen Commons Nursing Home. Mr. McCarthy was born in Boston, MA, and lived in Highland, NY and Kingston, NY before coming to Albany in 1967. He worked for many years as a radio broadcaster for radio stations WKNY and WGHQ in Kingston, and was employed by the New York State Dept. of State for twenty years, in addition to broadcasting at Albany stations WROW, WGY, and WABY. He received numerous awards from the New York State Broadcaster’s Association. He also was a communicant of the former St. Margaret Mary’s Church in Albany for many years.
Mr. McCarthy was predeceased by his wife Marie R. McDonough McCarthy. He is survived by his son Richard J. McCarthy, Jr. of Loudonville; his daughters Anne Marie McCarthy (Steven Gower), and Kathryn Scott (Edward) of Denver, CO; and by his grandchildren Quinn and Claire Gower.
